Powerpuff Girls 2016 Review (Episodes 1-18)

I know I already discussed this show but that was more of a first reaction as I only saw 3 episode when I did that blog post. Now I'm completely caught up with all the episodes aired as of this writing. The first 18. During my first reaction I said that my opinion of the show was that it was good. It turned out that my opinion was very unpopular. This show has been reviled. Not quite as much as Teen Titans Go but still there's a lot of hatred towards it. Heck Rebel Taxi said it was his 4th least favorite cartoon series. I guess after getting myself caught up I can see why he'd say that but honestly my opinion has not changed. I still find it a decent show. Not the best but still enjoyable to watch. It does have problems though. So let's dig into the Powerpuff Girls reboot and finally finish up Powerpuff Month which in actuality was 2 months and a quarter.

The story is the same as the original. Professor Utonium tried to create the perfect little girls using sugar, spice, and everything nice, but accidently added an extra ingredient to the concotion.....chemical X. Thus he created 3 super powered little girls who use their powers to defend the city of Townsville.
The show is kind of like Teen Titans Go in that its a more comedic reboot of its predecessor. The only difference being the original Teen Titans was trying to be a serious show with the occasional funny moment as opposed to the Powerpuff Girls which was a silly, comedy show originally which is probably why this isn't as hated as Teen Titans Go. But people still take issues with it. Where should I start. I guess the comedy since this is a more comedic focused show. The original show did focus a lot on comedy but also tried to be a fun action show. This show is mostly focused on the jokes. And.....it's sense of humor is OK. It's kind of like that episode of the Simpsons I reviewed. It has some great jokes every now and then but it also has a lot of jokes that fall flat. The most infamous being the reference to the No Me Gusta Meme.
Ironically the people who dissed the show for using this out dated meme (which don't get me wrong the show deserves the criticism it got for doing this) turned this itself into a meme.
But like that Simpsons episode I mentioned earlier most jokes work, they just fail to reach the heights they want. They're technically not complete failures as jokes but didn't exactly make you laugh or even smile. But even though I feel most of the jokes are just OK there's a lot that fall flat. A lot. I guess that's really the big issue people have. If your focus is more on the comedic elements of the original show then you should be just as funny if not more so than the original. But I'm gonna try and leave the original out of my overall thoughts on this incarnation. Even then it still falls flat a lot and only really has a small handful of jokes that actually made me laugh. I said in my first reactions that I found it was an overall funny show but my opinion has changed obviously after watching more episodes. It's sad cause the show does have some legitimately funny moments proving to me that it can be fricking hilarious. Heck the entire episode 'The Stayover' is probably my favorite episode because it had me laughing from beginning to end. It can pull some good jokes out but doesn't for whatever reason. People have complained about the show dating itself with pop culture references and trying to be hip with the current generation (which rarely ever works, all it makes you do is look like a stereotypical soccer mom.) I don't personally mind to much unless the references get obnoxious. Like the No Me Gusta thing I mentioned earlier, or a scene in the episode 'Painbow' where.....*sigh*....they start twerking.
Ah.....I really should use that pic more often.
We Bare Bears is a perfect example of how to do pop culture references without being to obnoxious. They make references to Selfies and things of that nature but never get annoying with it. Plus the show has other amazing qualities about it.
So yeah jokes are a bit of a mixed bag.

How are the characters.
I actually like them. Like everything else about this show the original handled the characters better, but if we ignore the original for just a bit these characters are fine. Since this is a more comedic version the personality traits are a bit over exaggerated which is flanderazation but like I said I'm trying to keep this show out of the context of the original. To see its own qualities. And in terms of characters I don't have a whole lot of problems. The professor, and the mayor do get thrown to the side a bit and heck even the narrator does. And for some reason they completely took Ms. Bellum out of the show. Yeah the mayor's aid only appeared in one episode and in that episode was completely written out. Why?

“We felt like Ms. Bellum wasn’t quite indicative of the kind of messaging we wanted to be giving out at this time, so we sort of had her move on. And that was a good choice I think on our part.”-Executive Producer Nick Jennings.

What!!! Why are you being so vague? What messaging? You......really don't have a good answer do you? Yep, figured as much.
The girls really are the main focus of this show. Blossom is still Blossom just with extreme OCD, and her studious-ness taken up to 11. Bubbles is still an air head with her obsession for frilly, girl things taken up to 11 and practically no mention of how hardcore she is.
Yeah that doesn't happen.

Buttercup is still the roughest and toughest of the bunch but added in is an extra dose of snarkiness and sarcasm. Oh and she's extremely radical man. You can tell how rad she is by the EXTREME and hip way she talks.
Other than a few over exaggerated traits though they're pretty much the same girls we know and love. I do have a problem though. Sometimes the trait that's been over exaggerated completely takes over the character and can lead to some annoyance. Weather the character just does something stupid because of that trait or they just keep pounding that trait into the fricking ground to the point it's just a bit annoying to watch. This mostly happens with Blossoms OCD. Don't get me wrong theirs nothing wrong if you have OCD it's just she sometimes does really stupid things because of it. Though those minor moments of annoyance rarely happen at all. I well admit that the new comedic personalities for all the girls fit the character. I especially like what they did with Buttercup. Sure she talks all EXTREME and everything but it doesn't really get on my nerves to bad. Plus I like the snarkier side of her in this reboot. Another thing I really love is the sense that these girls care deeply for each other. Their relationship with each other is rather nice. I really enjoyed it. They feel like a close family. As for their new voices they may seem off at first since your not use to them, but when you do get used to them you'll realize that the voices fit the characters rather nicely.
I still got to wonder though why the voices of the girls didn't stay the same even though most of the other character's voices did.

As for villains on the other hand the new ones are a bit forgettable, but luckily we still have the old ones. The show tries to do its own thing so it created some villains, but most of the new villains are kinda weak. And the only old villains that have made an appearance thus far is Mobucks, Mojo (though he wasn't even the main villain in the episodes he appeared in) and Him (who we only saw for a brief few seconds.) Fuzzy Lumkins and The Gangreen Gang also appear in one episode but don't really do anything. They're only there for a joke in the episode they appear in, but it was nice to see them. I get the feeling though they were thrown in to make people feel nostalgic. I heard that the Amoeba Boys are also coming in a future episode perhaps even the next one. But either way the old villains seem to be the same old ones we all love the new ones on the other hand though are quite forgettable and bland with a few exceptions like Man Boy. Man Boy's pretty cool.

Honestly each episode has its own little thing to talk about weather good or bad. There not a whole lot to say about the show in general.

The plot lines for each episode vary in terms of quality. I never really straight up despised any episode though. In fact in some ways I'm glad we got this reboot just because otherwise we wouldn't get some of these plots. The plots can be completely ridiculous to kinda serious......well as serious as a comedic show like this can get.
It does have some serious moments like in Horn Sweet Horn when the 'unicorn' gets turned Into a monster....that got pretty dark. And Him should be making an appearance anytime in this show now. He made a brief one in one of the episodes but it wasn't for long. It seemed like the same old Him. Guess they kinda figured it would be hard to do anything comedic with him so if they did use him that might churn out a semi serious episode a la Speed Demon or they may never use him again and since they wrote off Ms. Bellum this wouldn't completely surprise me.
But point is I think this show has proven it can be serious if it wants to it just happens like only once or twice within the first 18 episodes. It's fine if they don't wanna be serious I mean the original show wasn't always serious either just occasionally so I'm not expecting you to be uber serious. Heck if you never want to do anything serious again I'd be fine with it just as long as what you are doing was good.
But most plots are just stupid little comedy plots nothing to interesting or special, but it's not a big deal. The meat of each episode is the characters and jokes. I love the characters but the jokes could use some work. They do have some really fun and interesting plots though sometimes.

Overall it seems I'm still at an unpopular opinion just like with The Big Fairy Share Scare. I rather like this show despite its problems. Though I have listened to what others have said about it and yes I do understand their criticism. There is a lot that can be criticized. Honestly like everything else I review check it out for yourself and see if you like it. The only purpose of my review was to share my thoughts and give people a general feeling on if this show might please them or not.

Based on others reactions I definitely can say there's a big chance you'll dislike it but there's still a chance it could be a fun entertaining show for you. I think the only thing people who like and dislike the show can agree on is that it's no where near the original's quality. It doesn't have the same wit and charm as the original. It tried to do its own little thing. Be it's own show and it's really up to you to decide weather it succeeds in making something fun and entertaining.

But if you ask me I think this show is good.

Well that's the end of the review and Powerpuff Months. Finally. I'm glad to just be done with that.
Next time I'll be looking at a really bad Spongebob episodes but until then I'll se you guys later.
Peace.
