Hey, Evan. Where's the new Animated Critic.
I've been having trouble uploading pictures. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't. (Luckily it worked for this post) So yeah doing that review has been frustrating. I tried to use Google Drive, didn't work. Tried clearing my browser cache, worked only once. Blogger is just really ticking me off right now. So to fill in time I'm doing a new series called a Quick Thoughts. This is where I give my brief thoughts on a cartoon episode that recently aired. Someday I may take episodes I talk about on this series and do full Animated Critic reviews on them, but for now these are my brief thoughts, and unlike a full animated critic review I won't be talking about the episode from begging to end. These are just general thoughts but I may bring up a few moments. So, to sum it up, these are pretty much first reaction blog post.
Anyway today we're talking about a Steven Universe episode. In my So Many Birthdays review I said this was the best cartoon currently airing, and I truly beleave that. This show is beautiful, funny, well written and most of all gives me the feels.
This episode aired on September 10th 2015 (Thursday). It's been a while since the last Steven U episode hasn't it. The last one was Friendship which aired in July of this year so It's been almost 2 months. I and a whole lot of other Steven Universe fans have been waiting in anticipation for this episode. And It's finally here. Was it worth the wait.
Spoiler Alert: It Was
My favorite episode of Steven Universe was Ocean Gem but this episode was so good that it may take my #1 spot. If not it comes close.
In this episode Steven and Connie goes to Connie's house after Sword Fighting Practice. By the way there's a few callbacks to previous episodes so I recommend you watch a majority of the series before watching this episode.
The two you will absolutely need to watch are
1. Keeping It Together
And 2. Sworn to The Sword
There are a few other callbacks but these 2 episodes are the episodes you NEED to watch. I mean, you don't have to . If you don't you won't get to lost in the story but I still highly recommend you do.
So yeah when Steven and Connie get to Connie's house Connie says she wishes she could practice on the sword more. Steven pulls out her mothers sword from Lion's head (If you've never seen an episode of this show, trust me it makes sense in context). Steven says Connie can borrow it so she can practice. Connie is worried that her mom will find out. She does. Like any other mother she takes the blade away from Connie, keep in mind she has no idea about the magical adventures Commie's been going on with Steven or the fact that Connie can fight with a sword. She takes it to work. It just so happens Connie's mom works at a hospital straight out of a horror movie. Seriously I got a very Silent Hill-esque vibe from this episode. I'm sure some kid somewhere has nightmares now because of it.
Any way they go to the hospital she works at and follows her so they can retrieve the sword. They look in at a room that Connie's mom is working at. The patient she's working on is Covered by blankets. Once I saw the covered up patient this episode things got tense. I knew something was gonna come out from under there I just didn't know what and taking the setting into account, it scared me what could be under there. I felt legitimately tense.
And God, I was not disappointed when the patient was revealed (If this was a regular review I'd spoil what/who the patient was but in this series I'm not gonna do that)
So with the plot summary out of the way let's talk about the Good, Let's talk about the bad, and let's talk about the nerdy. Oh wait, sorry I thought I was someone else for a minute.
But seriously, here is the Good, the Bad, and the MEh
Good-The atmosphere in this episode is tense and I love it. I love it whenever an episode can create a really strong atmosphere. It's handled so well. Even though it's tense it still has its comedic moments though. I love how Connie and Steven try to disguise the sword as a coat rack. Also I just love Steven's and Connie's relationship, and this episode is a good example of why. Personally, I don't ship them as a couple, but I love the strong friendship they have. To be honest, I feel the relationship would work stronger as a friendship rather than a romantic relationship. They have such great chemistry in this episode. It's also has a really neat fight scene where Connie and Steven work together, which is really cool to see. I also love those few callbacks I mentioned earlier. I also really love the ending
Really, there's not a whole lot to say. But it was enough to get this episode in My Top 5 favorite Episodes of the show (Hint at a future countdown)
MEh-Nothing was mediocre about this episode in the slightest. It was all good. All good except for one thing that is.
Bad-I'm just gonna say right now the patient is not human he doesn't even look like a human. Yet, Connie's mom is insistent in beleaveing it is for a vast majority of the episode. Is she dumb. Now, I like Connie's mom as a character but seriously......that was dumb.
Seriusly dumb. Like aren't doctors supposed to be smart. All that time in college I would assume so.
Either way that was Nightmare Hospital. It may not be the most Tear-jerking or heart-warming but I loved the atmosphere. It was tense. It only really has one flaw in my opinion but other than that it was perfect. If that one flaw didn't exist I'd consider this a perfect episode and give it a 10/10. BTW still haven't found a cartoon episode that deserves that honor.
Score-9.5/10
Definitely worth watching. I'm sure I'll cover it in a full episode of the Animated Critic one day but for now you'll have to deal with this.
Next time I'll be doing a Quick Thoughts on My Clique from We Bare Bears and then I'll continue the Pig Goat Banana Cricket Review.
Peace.
