Well I'm sad. Seems Steven Universe is on hiatus until 2016. Curses.
But since there is one episode I haven't covered yet from before the hiatus I might as well talk about it instead of waiting to do that recap thing I said I would. (I'll probably cover the first episode of Steven Universe that airs after this hiatus seperately and then do the 5 episode recap thing I talked about)
With that said this is Too Far. I really was not a big fan of Back at the Barn (It's actually Back TO the Barn. I screwed up. My bad) so I really hope this episode makes up for the last one.
And hopefully Peridot doesn't come off as much as a douchebag as she did last episode. I really wanna see more development in the relationship between her and Steven.
To be honest I didn't read anything about this episode before going in. Usually I read a plot summary online but I didn't this time. All I heard was that it was gonna take place at the barn. Whatever though let's get into this. This is Too Far.
Plot Summary-The episode starts at the barn with Pearl getting the drill machine blueprints finished up. Once it's done Peridot comes and checks it. They decide to build it.
After that Peridot makes a comment about fusion that gets Garnet mad. (Though she doesn't show it) and ends up tied to a fence post like with a leash. Just like a dog. It's actually pretty funny. I'll talk about the comedy though later on. Peridot asks Steven for a screwdriver however she calls it a "leverage optimizer." Amythest finds this funny so she aske her what she calls other objects.
Peridot calls her nose a scent sponge, her eyes are vision spheres and her legs are gravity connectors.
Pretty much it's this trope in full effect.
Amethyst keeps cracking up and peridot seems to like the attention. Eventually they need a drill for the robot so Peridot says she'll go to the kindergarten to get a drill of of one of the machine there.
However she needs chaperones as the gems don't trust her to go alone.
So Steven and Amythyst come along. There Peridot begins to say more things Amythyst finds funny, but this time she's doing it purposely for the attention. She then tells Amethyst that she should be the leader of the crystal gems as she's the only real gem. Garnet's a fusion and Pearls are made to be servents. Amethyst is the only real gem at least in Peridot's eyes. She then brings up the formation of Amethyst. How she was born in the kindergarten, and how she's probably defective considering how short she is. The thing is Peridot is still trying to joke as she's saying this. Obviously this ticks Amethyst off. You could say Peridot went...........Too Far.
See what I did there......ah......ah.......no......ok.
And there's our plot.
Now for the Good, the bad and the MEh.
Good-The comedy in this episode is actually very funny. I laughed multiple time. The jokes about
Peridot's lack of understanding about the earth are very well handled.
Speaking of Peridot I love her in this episode. She actually develops in this episode. Sure she's still a douchebag and I can see why they are doing that. To show she's still not completely good and to show how much a terrible place homeworld is. However they want us to start rooting for peridot as a good guy. That doesn't work when she's acting like a racist douche. In Back to The Barn I didn't feel Peridot learned her lesson. And I was right as in this episode she makes a comment about how Pearl isn't an actual gem. However in this episode we see her trying to make it up to Amethyst after she hurt her. I feel like she's actually developing from the villian to the good guy. Which is great. She also starts to take notice of how complex the world is. Which I love. Peridot also starts to feel more like a complex character. Even though she hates the crystal clods, I mean gems she still likes the attention she's getting from Amethyst. Probably because in her time with the homeworld she didn't get very much attention and in a way probably felt lonely. I also love Peridot developing bonds with the crystal gems. In this episode we see the start of a bond between Amethyst and her. It works really well. You do start to understand why Peridot is taking so kindly to Amethyst. She's giving her attention which speaking of which attention from others is something all humans strive for. In that way I can really relate to Peridot. To be honest this is more of a character driven episode. There's not much else I can talk about besides the characters. Steven and Amethyst are amazing as usual and Peridot starts developing into a more complex and interesting character.
And to be honest I really can't ask for much else.
Meh/bad-Nothing. There really isn't anything to bring up that I disliked completely or thought was just meh. However as I said before just because there's nothing meh or bad about an episode doesn't mean it gets a perfect 10. Yeah I know I rank things weirdly but hey.
Overall-9.5/10
For outstanding character development and some truly outstanding moments that show exactly why I love this show. This episode has so many layers to it.
Like an ogre or an onion.
I also got a bring up that it kinda touches on the topic of how far is to far for a joke. It doesn't do it much but it's there nonetheless. I also really like that.
It's a great episode. I still prefer Nightmare hospital but this was still an enjoyable episode.
With that said see you guys in 2016 for the new Steven Universe episode. I'm sure I'like probably do another Quick Thoughts on another show before then though.
Also I should be getting my new phone soon so expect the Gone Flushin review to be up within a week maybe 2 (no promises though cause apparently I can never keep them whenever I make one)
Welp, see you guys later.
Peace.
