On the Run (Steven Universe)-Animated Critic #14

(To skip storyline stuff scroll down to the picture of the episode.)

You OK?

I'm fine Ashley. Are you sure you should be here right now.

I don't care what my sister says you're my friend so I'm going to make sure you're feeling alright.

Well....thanks. *Sigh* I just feel really guilty. I can't believe I did that to her. I feel like such a horrible person.

Hey, it's fine. Don't beat yourself up about it.

How am I supposed to not beat myself up about it. I hurt her dearly. I abandoned her while she was getting ganged up on. She told me I toke away what was most important in her life by just standing there. I'm such a fricking coward. I could've done something. Anything and it would've been OK. Even if I got the snot beat out of me it wouldn't of mattered. We would've still been friends and none of this would've happened. Ugh, I need to get my mind off of this. I'm going to do a review.

OK, just please don't be too harsh on yourself.

I'll try. See ya.

"So....many......feels......"
Show-Steven Universe
Episode Title-On the Run
Air Date-February 5th 2015
Season 1
Episode 40

Hello my name is Evan A.K.A. the Animated Critic. Yes it's time to talk about Steven Universe again cause that went so well last time.
Yeah the Joking Victim review was not my best work. Oh well that's the past for ya, full of regret. Allow me to make up for it though with this episode. On the Run. Not much to introduce here so I'll just say this well be a short review. I have other things to do like finishing the One Year Anniversary Special and catching up on the 'In Too Deep' episodes of the show. So let's dig into On the Run and see why it's one of my favorite episodes of Steven Universe.

The episode starts off with Steven reading a book.
The gems warp in carrying the marble things from a previous episode.....that I haven't yet covered but the cool thing about Steven Universe is that when they refer back to a previous episode it usually is only a brief mentioning, meaning you can still watch an episode with little knowledge of past events and still be able to get a lot of enjoyment out of it. In fact that's what happened to me. This was one of the first episodes of the show I watched and I had no idea what the marble things were when I first watched the episode.
Anyway Amethyst crushes one and as a result a bunch of ooze splatters everywhere.
She promptly gets told off for it. Pearl says this is serious business and that they have to research these things as it may be a sign the homeworld gems are returning and if they are they have to be defeated.
Garnet tells her to calm down and that Earth is still safe. Steven asks what they are talking about and Pearl explains that the homeworld tried to do some terrible things to earth. Her, Garnet, and Rose thought it was unfair how the Earth was being treated so they vowed to defend it......even if it meant they could never go home.
While talking about this Amethyst gets a very disgruntled look.
And yes this is important.
Subtle story telling at its finest if you ask me.
Anyway Steven says they're kind of like the No Home Boys. A series of books about a group of boys.....with no home.
The book he was reading earlier was On the Run his favorite in the series.
Pearl says that because they're in a house they are not like the No Home Boys. Which if you over analyze things like I like to do this line is kinda sweet. I mean the reason Steven made the comparison was because they had to run away from the place they considered home. Pearl saying they aren't like the No Home Boys could mean she's come to terms with this planet being her new home. As such she isn't a No Home Boy cause while she isn't in her original home, Earth is still a home to her.
Or......maybe I'm just over analyzing things again.
I tend to do that.
Anyway Steven says it sounds like fun to be a No Home Boy.
Yes being homeless is just the greatest. No food, no AC, No Heat, No shower.....do I need to continue this list?
Amethyst then shows her brilliance as a mother figure and says they should totally run away from home together.
Mother of the Year right here people.
So they do. We get a little song sequence that, like most other Steven Universe songs, is fricking amazing.
Also Amethyst's singing voice is beautiful.
But it does a good job of being entertaining while subtly moving along the character arc Amethyst well be going through during this episode, with lines such as:
"I don't care about what all the others say."
"Well I guess there are some things that well just never go away"
And "I wish I could see that's there's no better place than home, but home's a place that I have never known."
Yeah once we discuss Amethyst backstory all these things well make more sense. But weather you don't understand yet or you've already watched the episode and know what she's singing about, you just can't help but feel bad for Amethyst.
Anyway Steven and Amethyst end up on a train where they begin to eat lunch. Unfortunately a raccoon comes to eat Steven's.
Steven tries to sleep off his hunger, but hay isn't that comfortable.
Steven realizes that being homeless isn't exactly the greatest thing ever and tells Amethyst he wants to go home. Amethyst however says she still wants to go on saying that place isn't her home.
Steven thinks she means homeworld but Amethyst gets angry when he says that. She then ask if he wants to see where she really came from. This is where we get introduced to the Kindergarten.
Probably one of the creepiest parts of Steven Universe. Amethyst shows him around the place a bit.
The rock she used to play on...
Some old Gem technology...
And the hole she came out of...
Yeah......she came out of a hole. As Amethyst shows off more of the Kindergarten to Steven he understandably gets more and more creeped out, and to be honest you really can't help but to be a bit creeped out alongside him.
Steven then notices all the other holes on the side of the cliff.....
This freaks him out even more.
Pearl luckily comes in the nick of time saying Garnet told her they were here. She asks Amethyst how much she told Steven and this is where we get the whole backstory behind Amethyst and the Kindergarten.
The homeworld grew gems here, Amethyst being one of them. Luckily the place was shut down after the Crystal Gems won, but they kept Amethyst around for reasons not described in this episode, and she became a member of the group.
I feel like now would also be a time to bring up how tense this entire scene at the kindergarten has been. Even during this exposition its still very tense. You can just hear the pain and anger in Amethyst's voice as she's telling Steven all this.
Amethyst then says she's always felt ashamed of her past and Pearl, just being there, keeps reminding her of the things she hates about herself. Man...you know sometimes it's hard to remember this show is targeted towards kids. Which isn't a bad thing I absolutely love the fact that a children's cartoon can be so deep and emotional and not have to condescend to the target audience. It treats kids intelligently which is fantastic.
We get a fight scene which, like everything else in this episode, is well done. It's animated and choreographed amazingly and it just raises the tension.
Anyway it ends with the gem drill collapsing on Pearl and Steven. Steven uses his shield and Amethyst ends up running away. She starts to hide in her hole. Steven tries talking to her, but of course he really doesn't understand this situation so it doesn't work. So he convinces Pearl to talk to her.
We then get a really heartwarming scene where Pearl tell Amethyst that she never considered this to be a part of her and that she was the one good thing that came out of this. This cheers Amethyst up and when they get out of the hole Amethyst rushes to give pearl a hug......which just put a big goofy smile on my face.

And that's practically where the episode ends.

Overall its amazing. It's everything great about Steven Universe in a nutshell. Great characters, great emotion and a great story. Something else I feel I should bring up is that I just love the creativity behind the entire idea of this show and the backstory to it. This episode really showcases that. I mean Amethyst backstory is really depressing but it is rather creative. It just amazes me sometimes that people have such a bright imagination and can create such truly wonderful things with it.

Worst Part-We really never got a reason for why Steven thought being homeless was a good idea.....
Best Part-So many good ones to chose from, but I'll say the ending.
Overall-9.5/10

You know this episode does bring up some interesting stuff about the Past. It can be full of regrets and insecurity sometimes. You ever just sit there in bed at night thinking about all the things you've done wrong in your life. All the shame, embarrassment. Even if it was like 10 years ago you just can't help but feel ashamed about the stuff you've done.
I'm sorry I'm getting a bit emotional here. Ha ha. Well have a good day. If you like this episode please let me know and leave a +1 on this blog post. And next time.........wait......next time it's our One Year Anniversary.
Holy crap. What are we reviewing.
Oh God. Ugh. Well I guess this is my ultimate test. Everything I've done on this blog for the past year has lead up to this.
I'll see you guys later.
Peace.

.......
Ugh, that kid is still upset about this whole Adora situation.

Uh...excuse me who are you.

Oh, I'm Kevin. You must be Ashley. Nice to meet you.

Uh, nice to meet you to, but how did you know my name.

Oh.....Uh.....I've heard about you. I'm a friend of Evan so......

Ah, are you also here because you're worried about him.

Yeah. That boy worries me sometimes. I understand being upset, what he did wasn't exactly the right choice, but he's being so hard on himself. He has a tendency of doing that.

Yeah. Even as a kid Adora would have to comfort him when he accidently did something that he wasn't supposed to. Ha ha.

Do you think your sister would accept his apology.

I don't know. We're a stubborn bunch. When someone pisses Adora off who knows how long she'll be fuming with anger.

Listen I have an idea, but we're going to have to wait to pull it off.

Why?

The only way we're able to communicate with Evan is through this blog and next time he's going be using it it's going to be for his one year anniversary. I just don't want a bunch of drama to happen on that very special day for him.

But......we need to cheer him up as soon as possible.

Evan well be able to handle it. He's like this all the time it's nothing new. He'll manage his emotions. Besides I think being able to celebrate a year of doing this blog well definitely raise his spirits. We should just leave him be.

OK then......so.

So we wait, but let me tell you what I'm planning.

To be concluded.
