Back to My Little Pony Friendship is Magic.
As you know I love this show.
Today we are focusing on the Halloween episode since, well, this is Toon-O-Ween.
It's almost December though.
Shut it, Kevin. I know. I'm very behind schedule. New plan though, get the other 3 parts of Toon-O-Ween finished before Christmas. And yes I do have a Christmas special planned, but let's pretend it's still Halloween for just a few more moments.
Today We're discussion the Halloween episode of Friendship is Magic. Luna Eclipsed.
This episode prominently features fan favorite princess Luna. And let's just get this out of the way, yes her appearance has changed.
First appearance
Now
Fun Fact -This episode aired on the same date as Friendship is Magic Part 2. Just a year later though.
Either way, let's start digging in to Luna Eclipsed.
Instead of Halloween it's Nightmare Night.
Apparently every year the ponies would celebrate this holiday to keep Nightmare Moon away. You have to remember that Princess Luna was Nightmare Moon for 1000 years. The ponies feared that Nightmare Moon would eat them so they wore costumes to disguise themselves and gave their candy to Nightmare Moon as a way to appease her. It's a tradition now at this point. Anyway Luna comes to Ponyville but everyone is still scared of her thinking she's still Nightmare Moon. Or atleast still has part of Nightmare Moon in her.
It doesn't help that she doesn't understand modern society.
This causes Luna to feel depressed but Twilight Sparkle decides to help her out with getting people to like her. Unfourtenetly most of her attempts don't really seem to work as Pinkie Pie keeps frightening everyone. You know in Friendship is Magic Part 2 she sung a song about how you should just laugh your fears away yet here she's being constantly frightened by Luna. However due to something that happens later I think she wasn't even scared at all.
But yeah that's the plot summary.
First thing, Luna. I can really relate to Luna in this episode. I mean everyone is scared of her and she feels lonely. Plus she is also really likeable. I can really root for her. She's been locked away for 1000 years so it's understandable she would not understand modern society. We get to see her struggle to try and fit in. I can personally relate to that I mean I also had trouble fitting in at different areas, like a new school. I think most of us has had trouble fitting in somewhere.
So Luna's really good and I can definetly see why she's a fan favorite.
The other characters are as great as they usually are. Rarity's the only one of the Mane Six that doesn't show up though which is a shame. I would've loved to see what she would dress up as for the Holiday. I'm not holding it against the episode though.
There's only 2 characters I disliked.
1-Rainbow Dash
Throughout the entire thing she's pranking people by using a storm cloud and striking lightning to surprise people, which is all find and dandy I mean it is TRICK or treat but she made Spike pass out and just shrugged it off. And then she scares Pinkie which in turn causes her to be afraid of Nightmare Moon again once Luna and her were about to be friends as out of all the citizens afraid of Nightmare Moon, Pinkie was the most scared. But Rainbow Dash screws it up (if you watch the scene it makes a lot more sense. That's the downside of doing a blog ,can't really show the footage of what I'm talking about.) Yeah, that was kinda annoying, we don't get much RD though so it's not to bad. It also probably doesn't help that I have a distaste for Rainbow Dash to begin with. I know ,shoot me.
2-Pinkie Pie
Mostly because of the ending. Which I'll get to later.
So Luna tries constantly to fit in with the help of Twilight and the others including Fluttershy (well...kinda) and Applejack
I gotta say we get some pretty funny scenes in this episode.
Like the entire scene with Fluttershy.
Spike even has some good lines (specifically about the mayor's costume.)
Also like most other Halloween specials just seeing the Halloween spirit of this episode is also pretty enjoyable.
And when Luna begins to feel accepted you feel happy for her, but then Pinkie Pie comes and screws everything up by overreacting, and in turn freaks everypony out. And in turn Luna freaks out which is understandable as all the happiness she felt before and all the people who started to like her are leaving. She then cancelled Nightmare Night as she feels it's disrespectful.
She then takes her leave.
We then get to the ending, oh boy. I really don't like this ending. It's not the worst ending, heck not even the worst ending to an animated episode (I'll be getting to the episode that holds that title eventually. Spoiler: It's from Spongebob)
Anyway Twilight Sparkle goes to see what's up with Luna. She's obviously very depressed. But Twilight has a plan. She has Pinkie meet Luna and to calm her down. Pinkie Pie calms down and is about to become friends with Luna till RD comes and scares Pinkie Pie. Yeah, it's pretty annoying. You can see hate RD in this episode can't you. So Twilight catches Pinkie and tells Pinkie Pie that Luna is no longer a monster.
She knew all along, she knew Luna wasn't a monster, she knew she wouldn't eat her.
She just found being scared fun.
So let me get this straight, you knew all along but yet you still frightened everyone in the town with...well lies
She kept scaring people by saying things like "she's gonna eat you up". You knew those weren't the truth. They were LIES.
AND THEY HURT LUNA. You got everyone scared just cause being scared is fun but in the process hurt Luna by making her look like a monster. And you knew all along you LYING. If you want something similar to the quote that's said in the episode
Twilight-"Luna isn't gonna eat you"
Pinkie-"I know silly, I was just pretending. Being scared is fun."
It goes something like that.
Either way you get the point.
Pinkie was lying and hurt Luna knowingly just to have some fun.
Tip-check over your script a few times to make sure there's no unfortunate implications like this one.
Wow, that's......ugh let's move on
Twilight gets a brilliant idea. Have Luna scare everyone. And they like it.
So.....you like getting scared.
You liked it earlier when she came to town and no one was moving cause of how scared they were.
Did you like it when Nightmare Moon appeared in the first episodes Friendship is Magic
"Hey bruh remember when that deranged lunatic kidnapped our princess and almost caused an eternal night. That was so scary."
"Yeah man but it sure was a fun time right"
I think what they are going for is that people like being scared, but only when it comes to little scares like a scary movie or game or a a little surprise jump scare by someone in real life. Being attacked by a psycho villain is a big scare and almost no-one (except maybe the most strange people) would find that fun.
Are you telling me those kids in Nightmare on Elm Street enjoyed being scared by Freddy in their dreams.
I mean god, this is dumb. It ends happily with Luna getting friends and bringing Nightmare Night back.
Aside from the last few minutes though this was a good episode.
It had the Halloween spirit, it had some funny moments, and the characters for the most part were good. Especially Luna. You can really sympathize with her.
It's also an episode that shows how much Twilight has developed.
If you recall in Friendship is Magic Part 1 she didn't want friends. Now she's teaching others (in this case Luna) how great friendship is by just helping her out.
Overall with everything considered I'd say this episode deserves
7.5/10.
Without those last few minutes it would be higher but because of those I'm giving it 7.5.
I still recommend you watch it though.
Well before I go any further I'd like to apologize about how behind schedule I am. I should've had Toon-O-Ween done by now. But rest assured I'm busting my chops.
I'm working on the blog whenever I can.
Keep in mind I have a life to balance (that includes school) as well as this blog. I really am passionate about this project though and don't wanna give up on it. I work on this blog every chance I get (even during study hall)
So thank you for your patience. I am trying really hard. Either way that's it for this part of Toon-O-Ween. (Loses the effect when it's closer to Christmas than Halloween)
See ya next time.
Peace
